Overview
Since the rebuild, the current owner, his family and friends have enjoyed extensive Mediterranean and Black Sea cruising onboard M/Y Wisting.
MY Wisting is maintained to a very high standard and completed her 5 year Lloyds register survey in August 2012. She was, until August 2010 commercially registered MCA Large yacht code but is now privately owned and VAT paid.
MY Wisting's diesel electric drive system enables her to cruise in a very quiet and fuel efficient manner. She can make 6 knots with a sense of near silence using only the 3rd/ hotel generator, whilst maintaining full onboard facilities. In this mode she uses approximately 26 litres per hour increasing her range to 7000 Nm. Alternatively she will cruise quietly at up to 8.5 knots on either one of her two caterpillar C9 generators. The second C9 can be brought into service from the bridge, automatically synchronising to generate the power needed to push through heavy seas or achieve her maximum speed of 11 knots.
Oscar Wisting was Roald Amundsen's most trusted expedition companion. For 16 years he worked for Amundsen on board the Fram, the Maud and the airship Norge. Together they were the first to reach both the South and North Poles.
MY Wisting was originally commissioned by the Norwegian Navy as HM5. She was built in 1978 by Voldnes Skipverf in Norway as one of 6 Wisting class naval supply vessels built for the Navy.
Between 2005 and 2007 HM5 Wisting underwent a conversion from naval vessel to explorer yacht. The conversion fulfilled the current owner's ambition to create a sturdy and versatile yacht with innovative engineering features, capable and equipped for world cruising. The interior was designed to have a Scandinavian style look and feel consistent with her heritage. The conversion included replacement of the superstructure and all mechanical and electrical systems apart from the rudder and steering gear.
