Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co - the shipyard with a semicentenary history

Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co is a shipbuilding company from Baltimore (USA, Maryland). The shipyard produced the ships and yachts, were engaged in the restoration and modernization of old ships, carried out repair and maintenance.

The company existed from 1920 to 1970. Initially it was called Globe Shipbuilding and Dry Dock, and only after 1950 it was renamed into Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co.

The main specialization of the shipyard was the restoration and modernization of old ships. The company was not almost engaged in the shipbuilding: for 50 years of work they produced 18 ships of different sizes. During the wartime, Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co, as well as many other shipyards, repaired and restored the US Navy ships, and after the war, the company was left without work.

In 1970, Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co was bought. More than $30 million were spent on the modernization of the shipyard, but it did not have any results: in 1984 it was closed and partially dismantled. Until 1995, only one dry dock was operated and used for scrapping of old ships.

Some of the ships produced by the company are used up to this day and are owned by private persons and public services.
