1988 Hatteras Convertible

A handsome yacht in her day with a bold, aggressive pro-

file, the Hatteras 38 Convertible was a successful blend of

fishability and quality. Like all Hatteras models of her era, she

was constructed on a modified-V hull with balsa coring in the

hullsides, moderate beam, and a shallow keel for directional

stability. The standard two-stateroom, galley-up floorplan of

the Hatteras 38 is arranged with a centerline double berth

in the master stateroom and over/under bunks in the guest

cabin. While the master stateroom is large with two hanging

lockers and plenty of storage, the guest stateroom is tight and

the galley is small with very limited counter space. There’s

plenty of room in the 103-square-foot cockpit for a full-size

fighting chair. A molded tackle center, in-deck fish box, and

transom door were standard, and the engineroom air intakes

are located under the coaming. Additional features include

side-dumping exhausts, a well-arranged flybridge, wide side

decks, and a bow pulpit. A modest performer, standard 485hp

Detroit 6-71 diesels cruise the Hatteras 38 at 22–23 knots and

reach a top speed of just over 25 knots.
