Overview

The Krogen Manatee 36 is, quite simply, the largest 36’ boat on the water. Anything but a traditional hull design, she is broad in the beam as her namesake suggests. With her full beam interior living space, the Manatee was designed to be the perfect live aboard cruiser and has maintained something of a cult following as a result. Her shoal draft, fully protected propeller, great living accommodations and a fuel sipping 1100 mile range at 7 knots make her a natural choice for economical coastal cruising, doing the Great Loop or just having a great liveaboard.

There were only 99 of these rugged little ships built. Our offering, “UGLY DUCKLING” is a single stateroom version; these were so popular among cruising couples that very few two stateroom models were built. The unique single level design permits more useable space and the extensive use of solid teak provides a warm and inviting feel. The galley space is incredible.    The design worked out so perfectly that James Krogen, the designer, liked the boat so much that’s what he chose for his own.

The Manatee hull and cabin sides are of fiberglass sandwich construction with closed-cell PVC foam core heavy hand lay-up using mat and roving. This state-of-the-art construction makes this one of the most enduring and safest Motor Yachts for sale today. Closed-cell PVC foam core does not deteriorate or absorb water. The composite structure serves both as a buoyancy material, shock, sound and temperature insulator. It rides quiet, increases impact strength and eliminates condensation build-up inside the hull. Decks area fiberglass sandwich construction with end-grain balsa core. All joiner work, paneling, cabinetry and beam-caps are teak.

The protected aft deck is a great place for relaxing at the end of the day and is fully enclosed as well as screened. Up top, the bridge deck is also enclosed and has wraparound seating for guests. Behind that, the boat deck provides ample room to store a dinghy or a great place to entertain larger groups.

Whether you are looking for a boat to do the Loop, the Bahamas, or coastal cruising- or just want to simplify your life and live aboard- “UGLY DUCKLING” just might be the boat you want to do it in. Call and make an appointment to come see her today!

Features

Hull and Deck

The Manatee hull and cabin sides are of fiberglass sandwich construction using PVC closed cell foam core for buoyancy, impact strength, a quieter ride and temperature insulation. The closed cell PVC foam does not deteriorate or absorb water. It has the added benefit of preventing condensation on the inside of the hull. The decks are fiberglass sandwich construction with end grain balsa core.

Accommodations

Bridge deck: The bridge has a full hardtop, with safety glass windows forward of the port and starboard access doors. The center windshield opens. There is a full cockpit enclosure, with U-zip screen panels all around, providing great ventilation when you want it, yet protecting you from the elements in bad weather. The helm has a swiveling seat and chart book spaces, drawers and lockers on either side if it. The U-shaped seating behind the helm will seat four comfortably; there is loads of storage space beneath the seating. Headroom is 6’2”

The boat deck behind the bridge has lots of room for a dinghy or for additional entertaining space. There is a mast and boom for loading and unloading a dinghy and a large dock box for additional storage. A pair of deck lights provide plenty of light back here when you need it.

Stern deck: The fully covered stern deck area is fully enclosed with Sunbrella and has U-zip windows with screens. There are removable boarding doors on either side and a drop-down transom door for dinghy access. Headroom is 6’6”. There is the bridge ladder on starboard and double teak and glass doors leading into the saloon.

Saloon: As you enter from the stern deck, the saloon space immediately feels spacious, open, elegant and inviting. The floor is teak parquet, the fore and aft bulkheads are of solid teak staving and the overhead is white, with white beams running athwartship that are capped in teak. The hillsides are white with teak accents. There are sliding windows on either side and windows on the doors to the stern deck, keeping the space bright and providing a great view to the water outside. Bi-fold louvered pass-thru doors open into the galley, so the chef can remain part of the conversation. Headroom in the saloon is 6’6”.

On port is a sleep sofa, with custom built teak end table cabinets (2001) on either end. The aft one is a two drawer file cabinet; the forward is a large storage locker with a door. Along the hull side and behind all of this is cubby storage, which is mirrored on the starboard side as well. A pair of wall-mounted brass swing-arm lamps are at either end. There is a beautiful teak grate coffee table in front of the sofa.

On starboard, there is a teak and glass doored bookcase on the aft bulkhead and a custom built teak cabinet/desk (2002) on the forward one. That unit has double door shelf storage below and a drop-front door above those with storage large enough for chart books; this serves as the inside nav area and has a VHF radio mounted inside. Just forward of this area and located in the corridor is a  hall closet, with a hanging rod for clothing and shelf storage behind the hanging space. A round fixed port brings light into this locker.

Head: Moving forward from the saloon into the corridor, the head is located on starboard. The custom Dutch door to the head was built to allow more air flow and light when the head isn’t in use. As you enter, the head is in front of you, with a large screened sliding window behind it, making the space amazingly bright. The counter to your right has a sink, with a teak mirrored medicine cabinet above. Beneath the counter are three drawers and a double doored locker. Across from the counter is the shower stall. Headroom is 7’.

Galley: The Manatee 36 galley is something to see. U-shaped and just forward of the saloon on port, the aft countertop is an amazing seven feet long. The aft counter has deep double stainless sinks in the middle, with two drawers on either side of the sink and four doored lockers below the entire area. Bifold louvered doors above the sink open to the saloon; to the left of that is a tall locker, to the right two more tall lockers and across and above the bifold doors are three more lockers. At the outboard end of the counter is a top accessed trash bin space.

Moving around to the hull side, there is a three burner LPG stove and oven. Above it is a large opening window, while beneath is a drop down locker beneath it for pots and pans; to the right of the stove is a narrow locker for cookie sheets and the like.

Along the forward part of the galley, there is a long counter surface, with an upright refrigerator/freezer at the corridor end. There are four drawers beneath the counter and two lockers beneath the drawers. Overhead there is a cabinet towards the hull, another over the refrigerator and a pair of hatches overhead. Headroom is 7’2”, so if you have any friends in the NBA who also like to cook....

Master stateroom: The master stateroom is located forward in the boat and features a queen-size centerline bed, with four large drawers at the foot and storage beneath the rest of the berth. Nightstand counters flank either side, with storage beneath them. There is more storage beneath the twin side seats in front of the nightstands. The nightstand counters wrap around along the hull on either side. Below that on port are four drawers, while on starboard there are four more drawers as well as a lighted and mirrored vanity, with a cabinet behind the mirror and a drawer beneath the counter.

Across from the foot of the bed, there are bookshelves, with double door storage beneath the shelves. To port of the bookcase is a huge hanging locker that is L shaped and has two doors to access it. There is shelf space above the hanging rod and a round port in the hull for light inside the locker.

Headroom in here is 6’5”; lighting and ventilation are provided by an overhead hatch, four opening ports, an overhead light and a pair of reading lights.
