Overview
Weatherly is a remarkable classic wooden yacht - an America’s Cup winner, ocean racer, highly successful charter yacht, and frequent Class winner in 12 Metre regattas. She is a capable coastal cruiser and potential winner in any Classic Sailing event, whether the Maine Series and Eggemoggin Reach, the southern New England circuit, or in Europe. The bonus? She is a hard-working gal who pays her own bills.
Designed by Philip Rhodes and built by Luders in 1958 of double planked African Mahogany on laminated and bent White Oak frames, she has a pedigree of the highest order. Weatherly is reinforced with bronze ring frames, floors, and mast step, and fastened with silicon bronze and glue. She remains in excellent condition. As the winner of the Americas Cup in 1962 with the legendary “Bus” Mosbacher at her helm, she cemented her place among the world’s great yachts. She is listed on the National Register of Historic Vessels.
Outfitted for offshore racing in the 1970s on the Great Lakes and SORC and then based in Seattle, Weatherly’s current owner took ownership in 1986 and sailed her from Seattle to Newport RI via the Panama Canal.
Restored fastidiously, she took on a new life under the banner of Americas Cup Charters. Every summer for thirty-one years she has been helmed by her owner on thousands of charters and annually competed in regattas from The Chesapeake to Maine. Her winter maintenance program ensures she passes the rigid annual US Coast Guard inspection and operates without down time during each busy sailing season. Cosmetically she sparkles whether underway or at rest. Down below, her utilitarian but tastefully detailed interior exudes a remarkably warm feeling. Rustic coastal cruising is within her ability as is, while relatively minor alterations could provide for more extensive travel.
Her race winning record continues. Victorious over her Class in the recent 2017 12 Metre North American Championship held in Newport, RI, she is now offered for sale at a very reasonable price while at the top of her game.
