Engine and Mechanical

Twin 100 HP Yanmar Engines with AQUADRIVE Antivibration System by GKN.  Description of AQUADRIVE - In a traditional straight drive system, as the engine turns the transmission, the transmission turns the prop shaft, turning the prop.  As the prop pushes the boat forward, it pushes the driveshaft, which in turn pushes the entire transmission and the engine unit, which is attached to the boat via the four engine/transmission mounts.  So the engine mounts receive not only the torque of the engine, but the forward (and rearward) thrust from the propeller.  And is supposed to do all this is perfect alignment with the cutlass bearing.

In an AQUADRIVE system, the AQUADRIVE unit is mounted behind the transmission, on a heavy duty mounting bracket to the stringers.  The prop shaft is shortened and is attached to the AQUADRIVE unit, and ALL the forward (and rearward) thrust is pushing against this unit attached to the mounting plate.  Forward of this plate the AQUADRIVE unit is attached to the transmission (with what amounts to a universal joint in between).  So the engine (and its mounts) is only providing torque to the transmission, then to the AQUADRIVE unit.  No forward or rearward stress on the engine mounts.  Thus the engine mounts can be a softer material, which all relates to smoother and quieter, less vibration running.
