San Juan Composites are built in the USA at Anacortes on Fidalgo Island on the East side of the San Juan Islands in Washington state.  This vessel has lived the majority of it's life in Maine where it was seasonally used and indoor winter stored.  In late 2014, it was brought to Florida where is had been living on a lift (until 2-18-16).

San Juan 38's were quality built using E-glass, Kevlar, and Corecell foam coring material in a resin infused lamination resulting in a 100% composite structure.  The weight savings and strength of this construction are benefits that show in this boat's seaworthiness and efficiency.  Prop pockets allow for a modest shaft angle and remarkably shallow draft.  A single baffled fuel tank keeps the balance and trim consistent.  A great looking boat that was drawn by Gregory Marshall with softer and sleeker lines than some similar designs, with "a little Gatsby" as described by one San Juan owner.  A practical cabin layout offers 2 staterooms below, a rarity in any boat less than 40'.  

This particular vessel had a customization done to the cockpit area with the addition of an inboard swinging side entry gate.  Perfectly engineered and executed so one may think it was a factory option.  In 2010 the spring and aft cleats were upgraded to a hearty yet folding style which makes passing the side decks underway a safer transition.  The shining Flag blue hull is accented by a gold cove stripe and a double thin white boot stripe and a red bottom.

Topsides have a molded white rub rail capped with a polished stainless strike rail then a beautifully varnished toe rail and cockpit cap.  The deckhouse has a varnished half-round trim and four varnished grab railings on the cabin top and forward trunk.  The deckhouse is a light beige with the same color non-skid surface on the forward decks.  Entering the teak decked cockpit there is a comfortable lounge bench across the aft side with navy blue cushions with a tan accent piping across the seat.  Behind the portside aft lounge cushion there is an hinged step which folds out to make easy egress from the integral swim platform with inset teak decking.  There is also a retracting hot/cold shower wand found in the step opening.  Forward in the cockpit are two matched cushion lounges with comfortably pitched backrests which are actually the engine boxes (sound insulated).  A tan canvas and eisen-glass panel drop curtain encloses the pilothouse area and the center doorway panel can be folded up and that panel slides to the side if desired.

Inside the deckhouse, immediately to the starboard side is a countertop with insert covering a cockpit sink with fold-down faucet and a teak fiddle rail around the counter surface.  Just below a teak trimmed U-line cubed ice machine.  Across is a raised four-seat dinette with teak table and cushions matching the cockpit seating.  Above a 24 by 36 inch electrically opening skyroof is between varnished teak batons and flush mounted stereo speakers are above.  Back to the starboard side below is the main electrical switching panel.  Above is a very comfortable helm bench seat (seats 2 cozy, extra thick cushion) covered in an high quality, Spinneybeck navy blue leather.  The teak finished helm console surrounds a Furuno 3D NavNet 12.1 inch display.  VDO engine gauges and a 6-spoke thick wood rimmed helm wheel.  On top of the dashboard is a magnetic compass and within easy reach the Sidepower bow thruster control, electric spotlight panel, Vhf radio and autopilot.  The cabin reverse-cycle A/C unit has a vent and return on the bridge deck when needed.

The bi-fold louvered teak salon door opens and the top panel folds back to enter the cabin down two steps to the teak & holly sole.  To the port side and aft is the door to the larger berth stateroom with shelved storage locker and double bed.  Further forward on the port side is the galley area with decent sized Surell solid surface counter top with custom teak fiddles.  A gas stove and oven, microwave, basin sink, and refrigerator/freezer combo round out galley equipment, plus there are good cabinet spaces & drawers.  Forward is a V-berth with a filler cushion and hanging locker.  The hull sides are lined with teak sheathing and well finished.  Lastly to the port side aft is the head with vanity top, mirror and separate shower stall.

The Hull and Deck of SUNDAY MORNING were formed using Kevlar (hull only), E-glass and Corecell foam core composite vacuum infused with epoxy vinylester resin to yield a strong lightweight structure with high glass to resin ratio. The core is removed and replaced with solid glass and extra laminations in areas of major penetrations and high stress. Watertight structural bulkheads separate the hull into separate zones with dedicated bilge pumps. Structural bulkheads are built using Corecell foam core with E-glass skins infused with epoxy vinylester resin.  Built to ABS guidelines. There is a composite swim platform with teak inlay and molded rubrail with stainless striker.

A slightly unusual fact about this vessel, Hull #9 of the 38' San Juan model, the USCG document and the San Juan Composites hull badge state the boat was completed in May of 2001.  The hull ID number shows the last 4 digits as K000, which would typically indicate this to be a 2000 model with a late build date.
