"Sea Dog", probably the only survivor of a limited edition run of only five identical power boats built by Stephens Bros. of Stockton, CA. in the early 1930’s. One of these, “Panacea”, was reportedly commissioned by actor Charlie Chaplin in 1934 as a present for his mistress, Paulette Goddard.
Her first owner was H.A.B. Sneve of Seattle, who was the proprietor of a marine hardware distribution business. He equipped "Sea Dog" with extra fuel tanks, loaded her up with examples of his wares, and cruised from Mexico to Alaska exhibiting his products in every port along the way. When she was launched, Sea-Dog gleamed of polished teak, Port Orford cedar (a rot-resistant wood grown in the Pacific Northwest) and shiny brass. More than 75 years later, while other vessels have been lost to the sea, or simply abandoned to rot away, this salty old dog has lasted through the years – as well as through countless owners.
The boat is 55 feet, seven inches long with a 12’8” beam. She weighs 35 tons and holds 220 gallons of fuel. Sneve named the boat "Sea Dog" and evidently liked it so much that he changed the name of his company from Sneve Co. to Sea-Dog Brand. The company still operates out of Everett, WA as a major player in the marine hardware business. Although there is no longer any connection between the boat and the business, on the front of the annual Sea-Dog Brand catalogue there is a rendition of the "Sea Dog".
Having completed a $450,000 restoration in 2008 "Sea Dog" is essentially a new boat. Everything was been updated, replaced, or reworked. An oppurtnuity like this rarely comes available! This is your chance to own a piece of West Coast Maritime History!
The wheelhouse dimensions are about 12 x 12 ft. This large bright space gives the helmsman 360-degree visibility and has easy access to side-decks through sliding doors port and starboard. An upholstered, L-shaped settee wraps around a large custom teak adjustable height table. Companionways with folding doors fore and aft provide access to the forward cabin and galley.
From the wheelhouse a companionway leads to the forward cabin, which is brightened by 4 ports and a skylight. There's a huge v-berth, storage lockers and dressers, and a head with sink, shower, and storage.
Moving aft from the wheelhouse, down a companionway, we enter the large galley spanning the boat. The galley has commodious storage in drawers and lockers. The countertops are all stainless-steel with backsplashes and integral sink. Hot/cold pressurized water. There's a 4 burner electric stove with oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave.
Walking aft along a passageway there's a head to starboard with sink and bathtub with shower. To port is a large closet and pantry for the galley.
Next aft is a double stateroom spanning the width of the boat, with large bunks port and starboard, bureau and under-bunk storage. There is also a closet here with hanging and additional storage space.
Stepping aft up the deck, has a fixed canopy overhead and steps to the deck port and starboard. A hatch in the cockpit floor provides access to the lazarette. Canvas and lexan curtains provide a weatherproof enclosure when needed, then roll up under the canopy for storage.companionway we find the cockpit.
