Overview
Southern Cross spent the first 8 years of her life in fresh water on a
lake in South Carolina, brought to Florida by her current owner (her
second) and day-sailed on the St. Johns River. Fast and elegant, the
Catalina 32 has about the same sail area to displacement ratio as the
Catalina 34, but with better boat speed. With the wide beam and low
center of gravity of the keel, she is quite stable. She's not only
fast, she's comfortable! The T-shaped cockpit has high,
ergonomically-designed backrests, and great storage under the seats. It
can easily accommodate six sailors, plus two on the stern pulpit rail
seats! The aft swim platform is easily accessible by lifting the
helmsman seat.
Stepping below you'll find lots of light reflected
from the varnished ash battens that line the hull, the teak bulkheads
and handrails, and a teak and holly sole. Non-wood surfaces are white,
accented by suede-like fabric on two settees. Sunlight filters into the
boat from two large hatches in the salon (4 total in boat) and 10
portlights, five of which open to provide ventilation. Overhead lights
are scattered throughout. The companionway steps are rounded up at the
ends, making it easy to use when the boat is heeled. The master
stateroom is amazingly spacious for a 32-footer, with a queen-size berth
and standing headroom. There's plenty of room for two to sleep in the
V-berth, and the salon table makes down into a double bed.
The engine compartment has easy access through the companionway and, from the back, a removable box from the master stateroom.
The
galley, located to port, will satisfy the cook with a double stainless
sink, huge Adler-Barber refrigerator with 4" insulation, a freezer
section, and a two-burner stove/oven. A dry locker/pantry, three large
overhead cabinets, and a pots and pans cupboard aft of the icebox offer
generous storage space for longer cruises.
