Overview

This classic is one of only five ever made 60 foot Mathews Cruisers and the last and only good one left in the world.

Artania II, a 1970 60’ Cruiser build by the Matthews Boat Company in Port Clinton, Ohio, is the last of the wood-hulled Matthews boats built before the company began building fiberglass boats in 1971.  Formerly known as "Mahogany", the Matthews was owned by a Michigan congressman, and was a familiar sight to many cruising the Great Lakes every summer.

Artania II was purchased by her current owner at Mertaugh Boat Works during the winter of 2011.   That spring some new planks were installed in time to launch for the owner to enjoy a trip to Mackinac Island as well as win 1st Place in the Les Cheneaux Antique Wooden Boat Show, the third time she would receive that honor.

During the winter layup of 2012 plans were made to replace more hull planks, and beautiful new teak decking was milled and installed while the hull planks were being replaced. The deckhouse was refurbished as well.  Also a custom-designed and fabricated teak bench seat was built for the bow deck area, providing additional seating and storage.  All bright work was sanded and varnished to show-quality specs, and the hull was primed and painted.

The yacht underwent a major electronics upgrade including the installation of two complete navigation systems while making extensive upgrades to the interior wiring and electrical systems onboard.

In August of 2014, Artania II headed south, and she is currently cruising the waters of South Florida

“Artania II” has just recently undergone more wood planking replacement on the underwater areas. This work has been well documented with photographs. Please request these photos if required. The company that carried out these repairs is Gillen Diesel and Marine Services at Harbour Towne Marina in Dania Beach Florida. As well as new bottom planking, a new 17.5 Kw Phasor Generator, New AGM Batteries, Mastervolt Battery Charger and Magma Energy Inverter were installed, as well as many other upgrades including some electrical upgrades. New 12 volt “gulper” bilge pumps were added to the machinery space.

There has been no expense spared in the care and upgrades to the vessel “Artania II”.
