Overview

FINN - 2015 Bañuls/McConaughy Cruising Trimaran

The owner, who is well experienced in high performance sailing presented designer Renaud Banuls with a very challenging brief.   “A trimaran, designed for greater safety, permitting the thrill of sailing fast short handed, while offering comfortable appointments and accommodations in a fluid, cozy and ergonomic layout”.

The design process began by calculating the ideal righting moment then finding a balance for displacement, sail area and construction materials.  To paraphrase the owner’s description of the philosophy behind her construction; “we used carbon in highly loaded areas and aloft; infused E-Glass was used in the hull as it is quieter and more forgiving in the event of a grounding”.

Aside from the spacious large and safe cockpit, her deck layout includes the ability to reach winches and rigging controls easily from the enclosed navigation station.  This station also provides a complete view of the sails and foredeck.

The theme for her interior layout is ‘good daylight’.  This is achieved by thoughtful consideration to the location of hatches, prisms and port-lights, which ensure ample ventilation.

The owners’ stateroom is aft, forward of which is the main saloon.  The dining area includes a ‘drop-down’ table when an extra bunk is needed.  The guest stateroom forward features a queen size bunk.

Accommodations & Layout

On deck, FINN is all business with brilliant white gloss hulls and pilothouse, matte grey crossbeams and rig, and a dark red power blister on the pilothouse roof.  Her cockpit is 25 feet wide from helm-to-helm and spacious enough to fit 10 while daysailing. The pilothouse is flared to provide complete wind and sun protection for the 10ft aft bench as well complete spray protection for the winch drums. The enclosed abovedeck nav station provides a large panoramic view of the foredeck and sails as well as direct access to cockpit winches and control lines. FINN sports a bow to stern, ama to ama mesh and canvas awning system that zips to the boom and attaches in as little as 10 minutes to provide complete rain protection and ventilation in winds to 30 kts.  All hatches remain open. This means that in the tropics or extended periods on anchor, the interior temperature stays stable and cool with moving air. At anchor, the cockpit is dry in the rain.

Going below down the semi-spiral staircase to port, the color shifts warm with Sepele wood veneers, Amtico flooring, clear-coated carbon counters and warm white paint. Aft is the main cabin, while forward is the improbably large main salon, centered around a drop down table. This volume was accomplished by offsetting the engine by 400mm to port to open up space that would otherwise be unusable. FINN is a two cabin layout with one large, full head. The head is fully functional with a shower, carbon-fiber toilet, sink, and counters. Forward is a Queen-size berth with abundant storage and maximum ventilation. Illuminated by as much natural lighting as possible during the day, and shadowless LED lighting throughout, there are light fixtures and features making the interior very bright. Aft, the owner’s cabin is meant to be large, with the cockpit floor raised to enable maximum living space. FINN uses a "Whisper Wall" system to reduce weight and noise while also regulating the temperature down below.

The galley is equipped with a 2 burner diesel cooktop, pressurized water at the sink for fresh, hot and saltwater. Food is easily stored long-term in either the 150L refrigerator and 150L freezer. For comfort while cruising, there is a drinks cooler built into the aft cockpit bench, integrated cupholders around the cockpit and nav station, a heated foul weather gear locker, and Wallas forced hot air central heat.

Spars & Rigging

Lorima high modulus carbon fiber spreaderless rotating mast. Navtec canting hydraulics permit 6.5 degrees port/starboard. 800 litre stern ballast tank for blast reaching.

The two shrouds meet and then join to spectra which is connected to a ram on the aft side of the aft crossbeam. When one ram lets out, the other pulls in. To cant, the rig is either dropped before tacking, or pulled hydraulically while sailing with the press of a button on the nav pod. This same setup allows the rig to come off the boat in minutes by pulling the three large terminal pins.

Sailing Instrumentation

With safety being first and foremost, there is an UpSideUp system installed installed with fast dump buttons in main salon, nav desk, and each outboard winch pod.

Sailing electronics are provided by a full B&G package including:

Construction

The hulls on FINN are constructed of infused E-Glass/foam, with Carbon-fiber reinforcement where necessary. Her X-Beam Crossbeams are of carbon fiber, as are all appendages and chainplates.

E-Glass was chosen to be both a good balance between performance and cost, as well as for being quieter underway and more resilient in the event of grounding. As a result, the entire platform has a weight of 10.8 MT
