The lines, the equipment and the layout of the yacht show a racing/ cruising arrangement.
The 7/8 sloop configuration confirms the builder’s intent to create a sporty and comfortable yacht able to sail in professional racing regattas.
Grande Orazio is very racing oriented: the yacht has participated in the most important international regattas, achieving impressive results, such as first place in the Mini/ Maxi category during the 2013 Rolex Volcano Race.
At the same time, Grande Orazio is a very comfortable yacht, both on deck and inside, and she guarantees the guests ample and private areas to relax and enjoy.
The teak covered deck features two cockpits and it is designed to keep the crew and the guest area well separated. The guest cockpit is the ideal place from which to enjoy sailing in safety and comfort.
The crew cockpit is ample with two pedestals featuring carbon steering wheels and navigation instruments.
The guest cockpit is amidships and is equipped with a central table and a “U” bench which permits seating on three sides. A companionway permits access to interior.
On deck, going forward, there is a large, well organized area dedicated to the sailing hardware. The yacht is equipped with a large sail locker, an anchor arm and an hydraulic genoa furler.
Below deck, the yacht is provided with a double dinette and a well equipped galley and navstation.
Beautifully finished, bleached teak has been used throughout to manufacture the furniture, achieving a bright and light atmosphere. The furniture and the upholstery are in perfect condition.
The yacht accommodates six guests in three large cabins, with the master suite placed forward. Every cabin includes a spacious en-suite head with basin and wc.
Grande Orazio’ is the result of the desire of a young owner to build a yacht in his own image.
The aim when building this boat was to have a yacht capable of thrilling performance when racing, no compromises on comfort and yet still being manageable without the need for large numbers of crew.
Following the success that the Starkel 60 project was having in 2004-2006 (the first yacht built was ‘ICARUS’, owned by the then Italian Prime Minister, Massimo D’Alema), Grande Orazio’s owner decided to ask Roberto Starkel to help him realise his dream. Working with Studio Starkel in Trieste the owner’s brief was to design a luxurious and fast yacht, with unusual colour combination, innovative design and an emphasis on systems integration that allowed the control of a generous sail plan with a limited crew.
As with many of the best Starkel designed projects, this is a yacht customised to the client’s needs, with the most advanced technical solutions available in the yachting industry at that time.
When it came to selecting the yard, the owner wanted to stay very closely involved throughout the build process. In Base Nautica Stella Polare he found a yard that specialized in cold molding and was happy for him to visit them frequently, ensuring his dream became a reality. One major reason for appointing Stella Polare was their expertise in cold molded build construction.
COLD MOULDED MAHOGANY: THE BUILDING PROCESS
During the design phase and in discussion with Starkel, laminated wood (cold molded) mahogany with carbon fibre reinforcing) seemed to be the best construction method to be used for the build of this 60 footer custom yacht. The new developments in the world of epoxy bonding techniques enabled really superb quality composite wood hulls to be built which were stiffer and lighter than fiberglass, and were comparable with Kevlar and carbon composite construction of the time.
COLD MOULDED MAHOGANY: THE ADVANTAGES
There are three main advantages in using a composite laminate (cold molded) wood construction:
+ Lightness
This building technique enables a weight saving of as much as 30% when compared to a traditional fiberglass construction. The wood strips composing the hull are differently orientated in relation to the load they have to take. This means the material can be placed exactly where it is required and in the direction needed.
+ Seaworthiness
The revolutionary combination of wood and epoxy resins occurred first in 1970’s. The method avoids moisture absorption and as the wood is kept dry, allows it to maintain its mechanical resistance, at a far higher level than if the wood was allowed to absorb moisture. This in turn provides high dimensional stability, without swellings, bending and lifting of the strips, and creates a perfect surface for painting and varnish, that significantly reduces the amount of maintenance required when compared to older traditional wooden yacht building techniques.
+ Noiseless
A wooden hull typically creates much less noise down below, in all weather conditions thanks to its higher acoustic absorption capabilities.
A cold molded mahogany yacht is also a good choice in terms of costs: the building process does not need any mold to be realized, whose cost would weight on one only unit.
Maintenance cost indeed are limited to the ordinary hull cleaning operations.
HOW IT'S MADE
The hull of ‘Grande Orazio’ is composed of 4 layers: the first is a 10 mm thick layer of Douglas Fir, whilst the other three are 6 mm thick Mahogany. Between the first and second, and the third and fourth layers there are carbon uni-directional reinforcements, 100mm wide spaced one metre apart, placed diagonally from the keel to the toerail , impregnated with epoxy resin. The first three layers of wood are epoxied and then held in place with stainless steel staples. The last, outer layer is vacuum bonded to ensure an even pressure and bond and to avoid staple marks being left on the varnished surface.
