History

The Hinckley 42 "Never Sip" (ex "Whitecap" ex "Dragon Fire") is a custom Sou'wester 42 modified with performance keel, taller rig, reversed transom and state-of-the-art construction that was conceived and marketed by Hinckley as the Competition 42.  The standard Sou'Wester 42 hull shape was utilized and carefully re-engineered by the McCurdy and Hinckley design teams with the added collaboration of Doug Peterson who designed the new deep keel and semi balanced rudder.

The result of this high tech collaboration was "Dragon Fire".  A faster, stronger, lighter and stiffer boat that turned out to be one of the most iconic and successful racing yachts ever built by Hinckley.  As "Whitecap" she continued her winning tradition and sailed as flagship for the New York Yacht Club for many years.  During this period she would be launched for 2 weeks each year and then return to inside storage at the Hinckley yard in SW Harbor.

In 2012 her current owner purchased her.  Renamed "Never Sip", she has been lightly cruised and day sailed by a very meticulous and caring owner in Narragansett Bay.  Never Sip sails easily to her inherent speed potential with fingertip helm control, she also has gentle manners around the dock that allow her to be cruised by a crew of two, or a family of seven.  She truly is a dual purpose yacht that has been beautifully maintained and is only now offered to those who can appreciate the best.


Hull and Deck

Construction: Handlaid fiberglass deck and hull:
•  Hull is cored with Airex for additional strength per weight and deleted and reinforced in all high stress areas.  Integrated mast step and engine mounts form a single unit that is strong and light.  Hull laminate is fabricated of unidirectional glass for a better strength per weight ratio.
•  Deck is set in a 6” flange on the hull, then fiberglassed and bolted in place.
•  Bottom: Competition Fin 7' 11" deep-keel and Spade rudder - with Harken bearings performance package including spar.
•  Marelon thru-hulls
•  Teak and stainless steel guard rail at sheer.

Deck features:
•  Stainless steel bow and stern pulpit.
•  Stainless steel stanchions with double lifelines and port and starboard gates.
•  (2) Cowl vents in dorade boxes, (2) two large cabin top hatches, and (2) two opening ports.
•  Varnished teak exterior trim including handrails, toe rail, eyebrow, coaming cap and companionway.
•  (2) Bomar clear deck hatches, new 2016

Cockpit

The Hinckley Sou'wester 42 has a large cockpit which comfortably accommodates a large crew, but is also well laid-out for short-handed sailing. 

•  Custom stainless steel 55" steering wheel with an elkhide covered rim.
•  Custom Steering system with Harken upper bearings. Lower bearing, stuffing box and quadrant are all custom.
•  Rudder is carbon/epoxy blade with carbon epoxy post.
•  Total rudder post weight is 55-lbs.
•  Engine controls, including kill-switch.
•  Binnacle mounted 6" Ritchie compass.

Interior

Sleeps up to seven, including main salon berths. Access is from the cockpit, down a companionway ladder that can be stored up and out of the way. The companionway enters the aft main cabin that includes:

•  Galley - Aft to port
•  Aft quarterberth - starboard
•  Nav Station – Next starboard forward.
•  Main Salon – with Dinette to port and entertainment center starboard.
•  Head – next forward to port.
•  Owner’s Stateroom - Forward.

 
Interior features include:

•  Mahogany-trimmed White Formica bulkhead interior with a varnished teak and holly sole.
•  New covered cushions throughout, 4" foam upgraded perennials fabric.
•  Curtains in all cabins.  New 2015
•  Access to the forward partitioned chain locker.
•  Varnished teak handrail on main cabin overhead.
•  Frigast stainless steel light fixtures and dome lights.

Owner Stateroom

Starting forward, the Owner Stateroom has:

•  V-berth forward with an insert to form a double berth.
•  Drawer storage is available in drawers below the berths and in lockers above the berths.

•  An opening hatch to the foredeck includes a screen.  New 2016.

Head

The Head is next aft to port, finished with white Formica bulkheads:

•  Corian Cameo White countertop with molded stainless steel sink.

Main Salon

To port is a U-shaped Dinette with a dining table and U-shaped surround cushioned seating.

•  The table will lower to create an extra double berth (with cushion).
•  There is locker storage over outboard. Starboard is a settee/berth.
•  There are additional drawers under the top berth.
•  Forward is a hanging locker, across from the head.

Galley

Aft to port is the U-shaped Galley with a Corian Cameo White countertop with teak edging and trim.
•  Mariner by Balmar 3-burner propane stove.
•  Deep stainless steel sinks.
•  Pressure hot and cold water with dish sprayer, manual fresh water hand pump with Seagull IV fresh water filter, and manual saltwater foot pump.
•  Grunert AR-50 refrigeration and freezer.
•  Drop-leaf counter inboard.
•  Fold-down waste basket. 
•  Storage for dishes and silverware.
•  Paper towel rack.
•  Knife rack.

Navigation Station

Nav Station faces forward on the starboard side:

•  Full-size opening nav table with storage drawers.
•  Complete instrumentation mounted in custom cabinetry.
•  There is a cushioned nav seat.

Aft Quarterberth Area

Aft Quarterberth Area is to starboard of the companionway:

•  Ample storage in closed lockers over berths and drawer below.

•  Raymarine e95 Hybrid GPS/chart plotter new 2016.
