Overview

Classic lines by S&S and Swan the 55 yawl is a particularly popular S&S design. This cherished example has been in the same ownership since 1988 now retiring from sailing she is reluctantly on the market.

Owner's Comments

KIRA started life in Finland in 1972, hull number 009 of 16 55s built. Her new owner named her AQUENE and shipped her to the USA where she had all her working gear fitted out.

The owner, a New York lawyer and member of the New York Yacht Club, kept her until 1978, when she was sold to a west coast record producer her onboard parties in Sausolito became legendary! At that time her name was changed to ANDIAMO.

Our ownership began in 1988 when we had her shipped from San Diego to Hong Kong. Extensive work ensued, undertaken by Cheoy Lee Shipyards.

It should be noted that the essence of Nautor Swans reputation is in the quality of hand crafted workmanship and attention to detail. This is truer of the older boats which were constructed before the use of modular components etc.

It was my endeavour to attach those principles to Cheoy Lees efforts. As an example, her deck was relaid with 17mm teak. Sanding and caulking done by hand.

The work list comprised of:-

        New anchor windlass.

        New 8.4kW Onan generator.

        New Perkins M90 engine.

New cabin floor in galley to accommodate bigger engine.

14 pages of other remedial items.

The concept was to acquire a blue water sailing boat providing comfort and safety as a go anywhere boat managed by just two crew.

During our time in Asia we visited the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. We were able to compete in a number of China Sea regattas, allowing us to cruise remote areas of the Philippines. We also competed in the Kings Cup in Phuket, coming second in class in consecutive years.

In time we have seen our crew drifting off to get married and raise families etc. We last competed in a friendly regatta organised by the S&S owners association in Elba. It was a great occasion to meet up again, with our friends coming from Austrailia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and of course UK.

In later years we have used KIRA as a day boat based in Port Grimaud, France.

During her time in France she has been in the care of Monaco Marine based in Cogolin. The most significant works undertaken were to fit a new mast step. This was a major job as all the furniture fore and aft of the step had to be removed and then replaced. A full osmosis repair was carried out with the boat sitting in the open for 18 months or so to allow for natural drying.

In the last five years we have fitted bow thrusters, replaced our trusted Perkins M90, which had failed due to corrosion at the oil cooler heat exchanger. Golden Arrow Marine sent a team to fit the replacement unit. The newengine is a reconditioned unit as the latest M90 engines are 3 inches higher and would not fit. I believe the current engine is reading less than 20 hours.

In the last six months we have had her decks sanded and re-caulked, the work being accomplished by Mordziol Marine, a family run company in Cogolin. The depth of teak remaining is estimated to be around 12mm which is the norm on new build boats. Not bad for one sanding after 20 years.
