Broker's Comments

The Royal Huisman Shipyard builds astonishing yachts and S&S draw efficient and very beautiful lines. WHITEFLY benefits from a great heritage and she is a superb family blue water cruising yacht which has carried her current family far and which is now ready for more adventures. With her strong construction, manageable rig plan and practical layout she is perfect to long passages and very comfortable for enjoying and exploring the destination on arrival. She has been consistently maintained including a major refit at Berthon.

Owner's Comments

WHITE FLY was constructed by one of the most successful collaborations between designer and shipyard, in the history of yachting, namely Olin Stephens, of Sparkman and Stephens, and Royal Huisman Shipyard. Olin Stephens designed more Americas Cup Winners than any other naval architect. He also designed many fine cruising and racing yachts, including WHITE FLY, and famous FLYER, which were constructed by the Royal Huisman Shipyard. This shipyard was and still is the world’s finest builder of aluminium yachts and was a pioneer in constructing what we now call ‘super yachts’. The late Walter Huisman once told me that if he had the time to build and sail his own yacht, the design would be very similar to WHITE FLY.

WHITE FLY has proven to be a superb cruising yacht with fast passage time, such as Madeira to Santa Maria Azores in 69.5 hours. She has a sea-kindly motion and her construction is exceptionally strong. She has survived many Atlantic storms without damage. The well designed accommodation together with excellent facilities make her a most comfortable yacht, both at sea and in harbor. The ketch rig with long batons, hydraulic furling headsails, 22 self-tailing winches, autopilot etc. make her a very easy yacht to sail shorthanded. The long keel and the ability to set the mizzen sail with the staysail enables perfect heaving to ability – a great safety feature.

After much pleasure with WHITEFLY over the last 27 years, we have decided it is time to sell her and hang up our oil skins. We hope her new owners will enjoy her as much as we have.

Construction

RCD status:  Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25 EC (Recreational Craft Directive) as she was built and placed into use within the E.U. prior to 1998.

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

·         Aluminium hull repainted by Berthon in 2006.

·         Aluminium deck covered with a high tech resin compound which has excellent non slip properties, is hard wearing and aesthetically attractive. There is excellent insulation beneath the aluminium deck.

Keel & Rudder:

·         Half skeg rudder design with separated keel.  The rudder was dropped and refitted at Berthon 2006 and the rudder bearing was replaced.

·         Large ballast ratio with 10 tons of ballast our of 25 tons displacement.

·         Lead ballast is incorporated within the hull to make an extremely strong structure with no possibility of keel bolt failure.

Machinery

Engine:

·         1 x Caterpillar 3304, 4 cylinder 85 hp. diesel engine.

·         This engine has remarkably light and intermittent use over the years.

·         Only 4343 service meter units are recorded.

·         According to the Caterpillar service manual 1,000 service meter units are equivalent to one year’s usage, so that this engine has had very little wear indeed.

·         A full service has been carried out by qualified Caterpillar engineers every year at the start of the season. The last service was in May 2015.

Gearbox:

·         Twin disc hydraulic gear box model MG506 1.97:1.

Propulsion & Steering:

·         Hundested Multi-pitch propeller  Model V.D.3/2FR/H

·         Totally refurbished by Berthon in 2006 with stern tube and phenolic bearing replaced.

·         A superb example of Scandinavian engineering. These propellers are normally found on tug boats, fishing boats and large ‘super yachts’.

·         The propeller is highly efficient in both forward and reverse and full feathering is available whilst under sail.

·         Service batteries.
