Overview

GENERAL

The appropriately named “Mrs Seven” is the seventh hull in the Southern Wind100 mini series, and the first in its class with a Raised Saloon. She was launched in Cape Town in July 2008.

The new SW 100 Raised Saloon is aimed at owners who enjoy the aggressive, sporty lines of a low coach roof profile and open transom without compromising the generous interior spaces of a Deck Saloon version.

The successful SW 100 RS was designed by the winning collaboration between Farr Yacht Design for the naval architecture and Nauta Design for the general concept, interior design and exterior styling. “Mrs Seven” was laminated up through a process of Vacuum infusion with advanced composite materials (carbon fiber, Kevlar, Corecell and epoxy resins).

The SW 100 RS boasts more than a ton in weight loss through the absence of the deckhouse, the use of a high-modulus carbon mast and Park Avenue boom, produced by Nordic Mast, PBO rigging from Future Fibers and lightweight Harken race winches.

The interior layout follows the classic SWS configuration with the crew area aft consisting of two double cabins, two heads and a galley with separate navigation station. The guest accommodation comprises of two en suite twin single cabins and a double VIP cabin further forward.

The master suite is forward of the mast and is accessible through the study and includes a vanity desk and spacious en suite bathroom with shower box.

The interior styling reflects the sporting vocation of this yacht with the use of light color fabrics and contrasting horizontal grain teak furniture, the combination of which achieves the visual result of an increased interior space.

The engine room of the SW 100 RS is located amidships under the saloon so as to maximize stability. A control cabin, from which equipment and systems can be monitored, allows minimal access to the engine room.

Mini Refit and Modification:

  • During the winter of 2015 – 2016 Mrs Seven completed a mini refit in which a modification was performed on the stern by widening approx. 50 cm and reworking the wash deck on both Port & Starboard with new teak applied in areas of modification. All designs are on record if needed.

Modification of Stern: - this project consisted of 2 main phases Concept                                                                       and realization. The concept was realized by FARR Yacht design, Felci Yacht design and SWS. The project was followed through by TriMarine composite specialist and the works were performed by various companies organized by TriMarine.

  • Concept; arrived from communications with Farr, Felci and SWS explaining what the idea was and performing all necessary calculations to insure the modification would not hurt the performance, but actually enhance the performance (VPP increase by approx. 3.5%)
  • Realization; TriMarine found the best companies in the local area to perform the Scanning, Gurit for the structural designs, Moulds, Lamination works, fairing and finally paint work.

                    Mini Refit:

  • Rig; During the same time frame, we removed the mast to change the standing rig from PBO to ECsix complete. We also removed all mast fixtures and fittings. We performed a complete ultra-sounding of the mast and spreaders. After a complete complete fairing and spraying of the mast, boom and all fixtures.
  • Sails/ Running rig; New main and previous main reworked to be kept as spare. Stay sail has 1 year and Genoa 2 years. We also carry 2 A sails a comparable A1 & a heavy (A3). We serviced all deck hardware by cleaning, and replacing worn parts. Running rig is in a constant rotation of replacement with various lines being replaced every 2 years.

Deck area; dismounted all items on the superstructure and had all surfaces faired and painted with AWL Craft to include all hatches. Hull complete fairing and painting of the hull after completion of modification. Lazzarette, Sail Locker and Anchor locker completely re-painted. Deck cushions completely reworked with new covers on cushions and pillows.

  • Engineering; we removed the head on the Starboard Generator and performed a 10,000-hr service reworking the valves and injector pump. The Port Generator we performed a 1,000-hr service. Main Engine a 1000 hr service to include the dismounting of heat exchanger and aftercooler for cleaning and changing of all zincs. We also changed the principal fire pump and serviced both raw water and circulation pumps on the AC system. The Bamar furler for the Genoa we also removed and performed a complete rebuild. The APM anchor arm motor we removed and performed a complete rebuild. WE also rebuilt both Spectra New port 1000 to include a Clark pump upgrade. All fan coil motors replaced and system serviced
  • Electronics; The Navigation and Communication computers have been up-graded to include an updated max sea electronic charts. We also had 4 Garmin maxi displays mounted on the mast area. A new pep wave modem installed so to give a stronger Wi-Fi network throughout the vessel
  • Interior; The interior had the complete salon flooring, owners (to include head), VIP cabin flooring re-varnished. The Owners shower, Aft port & Starboard guest cabin showers re-painted. Crew Head and Shower re-painted and Galley cupboards re-painted. The salon cushions (seats) recovered to include the refreshing of all sponge material for cushions Backs & seats.
  • Deck Canvases and covers; Winter 2017 all Biminis and covers have been remade.
