This Sergio Cutolo designed conversion proposal for the existing 175'/53.3m PROTEUS is from the renowned Italian design studio Hydro Tec Naval Architecture. Some of the conversions main features include 6 staterooms with a panoramic 85 sq mt/910 sq ft Master Suite below the ABS rated, 4960 LB max load heli pad that carries a B3 Eurocopter. The Master Suite overlooks the aft end of the yacht with His and Hers heads. The versitile garage is designed to hold a 3 person ABS classed submarine, jet skis, kayaks, motorcycles, bikes etc ajoining an extensive dive center. The Aft Deck can carry two 33'/10m tenders and plenty of space for many more toys. She also has a luxurious cinema and Dining/Scientific center. Her entire lower deck is dedicated to technical services and the Caterpillar Engine Room. The Sky Lounge overlooks everything with al fresco dining aft. The Sun Deck and Crow’s Nest add a great deal of open deck lounging and observation space.
PROTEUS II is specified with a pair of Caterpillar 3512CA 1500 BHP diesels giving a constant cruising speed of 12 knots. Another option is to keep the existing Caterpillar D-398 main engines. The spec calls for one new Caterpillar C-9 175kw generator; zero speed stabilizers; new anchor windless; 2 new watermakers; Atlas converter and new cranes.
Variations on this design are controlled by an adventurer's imagination.
The existing 175'/53.3m Research/Expedition yacht PROTEUS was originally built at the Rysco Shipyard in Florida. (See YachtCouncil specs and photos. She is currently for sale at $3,250,000 and is located in Panama. ) PROTEUS II is a 53.m (175ft) conversion proposal based on PROTEUS which is ABS classed and was originally an offshore supply vessel. She went through a refit in 2005 and an extensive $3.5m technical refit in 2009. During the 2005 refit she was converted to an Oceanographic Research vessel that has further prospects to be transformed into a magnificent Explorer yacht like this proposed conversion. This handsome, robust and practical design shows what can be done to a research vessel and expedition yachts to bring them forward with modern yet rugged styling. The potential for owner and designer creativity with this project is evident and can be accomplished economically using the existing PROTEUS.
Proteus is currently configured to accommodate up to 19 guests/scientists and a crew up to 16. The interior is constructed to cruise ship standards so modifications are relatively straight forward and economical. She had a successful 2011 charter year with several multi month scientific charters including a photo shoot for the Sports Illustrated 2012 annual swim suit edition.
