Overview

"Relentless" is a 44 foot cutter rigged sailboat. She is cold molded cedar, sheathed with fiberglass, completed in 1988 and refurbished and updated in 2013.

Her owners have recently completed a summer tour in the Puget Sound and BC and have her ready for any adventure. They precisely set the boat up to be economic, easy to use for a couple, and updated to be a modern, yet classic cruiser.

Relentless is also fast. At 20,000lb displacement, she is 3-5k pounds lighter than the Hunters, Catalinas and Beneteaus of this size range. She also has a great deal of sail area (943 SqFt of Main and Genoa). On our short sea trial out of Anacortes she performed admirably in very, very light air.

This McGuire 44 has lots of upgrades. Read the full listing, but they include:

  • New Volkwagen engine, 65HP with 650 hours, which burns only 1.12 gal/hour at 7 knots,
  • New Simrad electronics in 2013, including radar and chartplotter,
  • 3 autopilot systems, one new in 2012 and two spares,
  • 8 sails, including cruising spinnaker, genoa, jib, storm sails and a large furling main.
  • 4 anchors, plus 300 feet of chain and 500 feet of rode,
  • 4 propellers, including two feathering props,
  • Lead Keel - 9,500 Lb
  • Life raft.

"Relentless" is ready to see in Anacortes, on dry dock.

The full story...straight from the owners:

Relentless was designed and built by Robert McGuire of Santa Barbara, California.  The design follows the lines of Bruce Farr designed boats from the early 1980s, for example #89 and 100-1.

Relentless was built with top quality materials and outfitted with oversized rigging and components.  The interior was simple without a lot of cruising gear that could fail and become dated.  We added items as they became important to us.  We sailed Relentless out of the Long Beach area of Southern California.  We spent many a weekend in Catalina with our son and friends aboard.  The boat was never challenged and never saw any weather of any kind.

In 2013 we sailed Relentless, no-stop, from Long Beach to Zihuatanejo, Mexico.  We left the day after Christmas 2012 during a small craft warning.  With only working sails we logged over 14 knots/hour for 6 to 8 hours.  We then sailed, over four months, back up the coast to Cabo San Lucas from where we sailed back to Long Beach.  We went out 600 miles southwest off shore and when the wind shifted tacked into Long Beach.

In May 2014 we shipped Relentless, on a ship, to Victoria, Canada and then headed to Alaska up through Southeast Alaska to Skagway, everywhere in between in Alaska and back to Anacortes, Washington.  This summer (2015) we sailed the British Columbia waters including the San Juans of Washington, the Gulf Islands, up Jervis Inlet, through Desolation Sound up to and through the Broughtons and back to the Seattle Area.

Relentless is ready for just about anything.  All systems have been upgraded and/or replaced for our recent cruises.  This includes a new engine, head, electronics, autopilot, sails, refrigeration, heating, batteries, charging system……… Our recent cruises have served as a tune-up; not remotely taxing the boat or systems.

Detail plans, layup detail, a full manual and survey results for both hull and rigging are available, if desired. Last insurance survey was completed in 2012.

Layout

ON DECK

  • The foredeck is flat, making it easy to walk around. Teak toe rails have been screwed in and glassed over. A large foredeck sliding hatch is great for ventilation and passing sails throught. Also helping ventilation is two hulls on the very bow portion of the hull, near the anchor.
  • Attached to the spreaders are 4 fuel drums totaling 60 gallons.
  • Underneath the boom at midship is the first entrance hatch, which is protected by a soft dodger. This hatch leads to the salon.
  • Aft, there is a large and well-protected cockpit with a hard dodger that has a forward ventilation hatch. Steering is by tiller, and there is a tiller extension. The wide main traveller is behind the helm and can easily be controlled by the helmsman. There is a hydraulic backstay.
  • On the aft starboard corner there is a stainless steel outboard davit with a 15HP outboard.

INTERIOR

  • Forward, there is a large chain locker with 300 Feet of chain and 500 feet of line. Further aft, an inviting Forward Berth comfortably fits two. There is a large space next to the berth to port for sails, and to Starboard for other gear, including another outboard.
  • The Salon is warm and inviting. The ceiling and floors are all varnished and glowing (The floor is also well covered with carpet runners). there are long settee to each side and quarter berths above them, great for extra storage and sleeping. You can easily sleep four in the salon. The table with large leaves accomodates seating for at least 6, if not 8.
  • To Port is a nice Nav station with angled desk. Many surfaces have be redone with durable bamboo to nicely lighten the look. Plenty of storage there under the desk and with drawers. The Electrical panel is very well labelled. Some of the batteries are located under the seat. Just behind the Nav Station is the Head, which has a manual Lavac head and shower.
  • To Starboard, next to the engine is the Galley which is split up and you can walkthrough to get aft. The sink is below the Companionway stairs (a nice plexiglass panel ensures cleanliness), and there is a customized cabinet for plates, dishes and cups. Across, there is a nice counter and two drop in Freezers/Fridges that are very power efficient and well sealed. There is a two burner stove with oven and Microwave. Plenty of nice drawers and cabinets for cookware.
  • Going Aft through the galley leads you to a corridor with an extra vanity with usable drawers, and through another door, to starboard is the very large Lazarette with loads of extras. There is also the ladder that goes to the aft cockpit, and to Port is the Aft Berth, large enough for two. There is a large access at the end of the berth for systems access.
