Overview

Sojourner was built by the Shannon Boat Company of Bristol, RI and is an excellent example of their quality workmanship and attractive design.  The Shannon 37 is an updated model of the very popular Shannon 38 with enhanced performance , a reduced draft and all the valued cruising options for extended voyages.

This exceptionally well maintained, two owner boat is a proven blue water cruiser with two transatlantic crossings under her keel and comes fully outfitted and ready to do it all again. Cruising equipment includes upgraded Simrad electronics, autopilot and a navigation suite, an updated sail inventory, wind and solar power generating systems, new batteries, an SK water maker, dinghy davits, a Monitor wind vane, and a custom, prize winning, five piece full enclosure with Strataglass and screens.

Walkthrough

The interior arrangement is designed to maximize space with a smartly laid out floor plan.  The forward "V" berth converts to a double with a filler on a 6" custom mattress. There are two louvered cabinets  and one open cabinet on both port and starboard sides. There are storage drawers under the mattress filler and on the port side a tall, hanging locker with cedar lined floor.  Aft and starboard is the head with a vanity, stainless steel sink, cabinetry, an updated Raritan marine toilet, shower, two teak grab rails, teak shower grate and a full mirror plus a cosmetic mirror.

Opposite the head is a half locker with cedar flooring and shelf space on top. A louvered cabinet sits above the shelf space. The main salon is bright, with custom ultra suede upholstery, and is spacious yet safe in a seaway. Port side, the settee pulls out and is lockable to make a single berth.  The starboard settee pulls out and can be locked to make a double berth. This settee is "L" shaped with storage in a well under the short leg. Both settees have lee cloths which can be strapped to the overhead hand rails which extend on either side the full length of the salon. On both sides of the salon, there are two cabinets separated by a book shelf above the settee backs, which drop down to reveal additional storage space. On the starboard side, one of the cabinets is dedicated for wine or spirits. On the port side, there are three drawers below the settee. There is a beautiful center line teak table with two folding leaves and storage inside.

Aft of the salon, port side, is a full navigation station which includes the radios, a chart plotter, a lift top desk with a frame to secure a laptop computer, book shelves and the water maker controls. A wet locker and drawer space is located in the nav station cabinetry. Aft of the nav station is the quarter berth were the EPIRB and the emergency tiller are secured In their respective brackets. Throughout the boat there are reading and overhead dome LED lights. There are six 3-speed Boro fans. Opposite the nav station is the U-shaped galley.

Galley

This U-shaped galley was designed for life underway with a deep, double basin stainless steel sink, an updated gimbaled three burner Force 10 stove with an oven and broiler, pressurized hot/cold water, salt water faucet with mechanical pump, Frig-o-boat refrigeration and freezer on separate thermostats and Seagull water filtration. There is a mechanical pump to either draw fresh water from the tanks or drain the refrigeration compartment. Counter space is abundant as is storage which occurs in cabinets outboard and behind the refrigerator, in a deep pot well and a set of drawers. There is a custom paper towel holder mounted on the bulkhead.

Hull Construction

The Shannon 37 has a modern keel/centerboard with a cutaway forefoot to permit easy tacking in moderate air and designed to maximize windward performance with improved steering and balance. She has an internal lead ballast encapsulated and sealed within fiberglass laminates, a protected propeller, an Airex-cored and hand laid hull with fire retardant resin on the interior, reinforced transom perfect for self steering, reinforced stringers and extra laminates in the bow section. She is stiff, strong and dry with a hull to deck joint that is bonded and thru bolted every eight inches with solid ash cleat backing the internal flange.  In 2006, the hull was taken down to gel coat and inspected for blisters.  None were found so two coats of barrier coat were applied.  From then to the present the anti fouling paint has been Petit Trinidad, most recently applied in November 2015.

Owners Comments

Sojourner has cruised the Great Lakes, the coastal SE United States, the Bahamas, to Bermuda, the Azores, Portugal, Madeira, Porto Santos, Agadir, Morocco , the Canaries, St. Lucia to Grenada and back to Florida. She has been sturdy in ocean storms and a wonderful home in idyllic Caribbean anchorages. She has turned heads in harbors all along this trip. Her systems have been upgraded with quality gear that match Shannon's original objective to produce a comfortable, safe, ocean going boat. The bright work was completed in January 2016 in St. Lucia and in that process the old teak was completely stripped, two coats of barrier coat were applied and eight coats of Epifanes Clear Coat were added. The teak below deck has just been oiled.  We proudly offer Sojourner for her next adventures.
