A Note from the Owners

Gallivant, a Hirsch Gulfstar 45’: Comfort and 1,000-mile range even if it’s not windy.

It all started because of a kitty. Don and Maryann, the former owners of s/v Gallivant—a 1987 Gulfstar 45 also owned a Bengal kitten called Kai. They needed a kitty-sitter aboard their boat (s/v Straight from the Heart) and I signed up for the job. We bonded over Kai and remained in touch. Their name for the boat was appropriate—Maryann hired Don for crew, and he never left. They spent 15 years and over time $250K making Straight from the Heart* their ideal cruising and live-aboard home. While they only cruised Heart through the Caribbean and up and down the east coast, Gulfstars have proven themselves worthy of circumnavigation (in No More Mondays, a Gulfstar 50 survived some crazy conditions). In 2013 a lightning bolt strike very near Heart prompted Don and Maryann to replace their entire electrical and plumbing system and all electronics).

Don and Maryann knew we were once again shopping for sailboat when they decided they wanted to purchase a trawler. Ironically, we just sold our trawler on the West Coast because it made more sense to buy a boat on the east coast than to sail or truck it there.

We knew Don and Maryann made extensive and thoughtful upgrades and were diligent about their maintenance.

*Don and Maryann wanted to take the Heart name with them to their next boat, so we renamed her Gallivant, though you will see some items aboard Gallivant, such as the AIS still identified as Str8fromthe Heart.

We left immediately after buying Gallivant for the Bahamas because we knew the boat was well maintained enough that we could (and we paid for a very thorough inspection before purchase). We intended to do a bottom job along with our inspection haul out, but at the last minute, Green Cove Springs’ larger Travel Lift broke, so they were unable to put us on their stands. We planned to do the bottom job on a haul out this summer but decided instead we want to return to a powerboat, this time, something trailer-able for shorter outings on the US East Coast.

Gulfstars are performance sailboats originally designed for the charter trade, with two cabins, each with a door that can be closed for privacy as well as a bathroom (head) for each cabin. There’s an ample cockpit to enjoy sundowners and meals al fresco, and a well-designed galley with a massive refrigerator and freezer. The built-in storage allows even liveaboards more than enough space for everything, more than enough for long cruise provisioning, tools and spares and there’s additional dry sealed storage under every floorboard. Because Gulfstars were built in Florida, they opted for a 64’ mast, short enough to make it under Florida’s many non-lift bridges.

Gallivant is the very last Gulfstar Hirsh 45 built; one of only 30, though Gulfstar made more 44s. Vince Lazarra, Gulfstar’s founder, went on to build Lazarra luxury powerboats.

Between the main, auxiliary and 3 5-gallon fuel jerry jugs, Gallivant’s reliable 2008 54-horse Yanmar motor with only 1255 engine hours, you can travel 1,000 miles even if there’s no wind.

We’ve boated since 2009 and are grateful for the many kindnesses we’ve received from the boating community. Our philosophy is to pay it forward. If you have questions about the boat, cruising or living aboard, or you’re more mechanically-oriented, ask away! Wayne is a retired journeyman aircraft mechanic, so if he doesn’t know the answer, he can figure it out.

Elegance, comfort, and performance . . . Gulfstars and Gallivant will take you where you want to go. Where are you dreaming of?
