Nirvana is a 1972 Hinckley 49 (Hull #008) that had a custom extension done to the stern in 1985 at the Hinckley Yard in SW Harbor.. The extension increased the waterline thus giving her more speed and stability. With the extended waterline the rig was also changed from its original ketch rig to a cutter rig with a taller mast (63.5') and longer boom thus increasing the sail area to 1123 square feet.
The interior of the boat has remained just as Henry Hinckley designed her.
I had the pleasure of captaining a H-49 for a number of years and can viualize the hull extension with the taller rig definately adding to the boats's performance.
Nirvana has a two stateroom, two head interior layout finished in a beautiful varnished mahogany.
Starting forward is a "V" berth with an insert that makes roomy double. There are numerous lockers with sliding doors for storage but drawers as well. A hatch above add light and ventilation.
Moving aft to port is the guest head with Raritan marine head, vanity, mirror, shower and storage.
The main salon features two "L" shaped berths with a folding two leaf table in between.Seating for four or more around the table. Outboard of each berth, there a opening lockers, bookshelves, pull out drawers for an amazing amount of storage. There is good light and ventilation. There is a TV on the starboard side and stereo speakers as well. The salon is highly varnished and shows off the quality of the work done by Hinckley yachts.
Moving aft on the starboard side is the nav station featuring a large working area and numerous pull out drawers. The radios are located here and in an opening cabinet is the 12v panel.
Aft of the chart area is a work room with storage, 120v panel and access to the main engine.
On the port side is the walk through to the aft stateroom the goes thru the galley. The galley is on both sides of the walk through and will be discussed in the next section.
Next, we enter the aft stateroom that features a double to starboard and a single to port. There is also a rear companionway the leads to an owners cockpit. The stateroom is beautifully appointed with varnished mahogany. There are numerous drawers and lockers for storage and hanging lockers.
