Overview

"Shanghai Lilly" is the perfect island hopping schooner. She has immense appeal to the traditional sailor who wants a beautiful go-anywhere vessel and who appreciates simplicity and self-sufficiency.She is truly equipped to be the ideal boat for living on the hook and under sail in the Caribbean. She will turn heads in any anchorage. Her modern rig is set up so that she can be easily handled under sail, and her interior is spacious and luxurious, with a well-equipped galley and two nicely appointed staterooms.

What is most remarkable about this boat is her rugged beauty. She is truly stunning. George Sutton's eye for balance and beauty is evident in her lines. Her deck is clean and functional, she is rugged where she needs to be, and her interior is extremely comfortable. Her engine is easily accessible, and her 12V system ensures that you will have everything you need to live on the hook. She is a platform for adventure.

Her spars, sails, standing and running rigging were replaced in 2010 with performance and ease of handling in mind. She is stunning under sail (see photos and sail inventory!).

Her interior bilges are epoxy coated and her exterior is well maintained. There is not a spot of rust or water in her bilge and her topsides and obviously been well maintained. Interior upholstery is new, and all woodwork on the interior has been recently refinished. She is truly a special boat and one you will be proud to own!

Accommodations

There are three points of entry into "Shanghai Lilly's" interior--through the aft cabin, through the pilothouse, and through the forepeak. This adds to the feeling that her deck is just as much a living space as her interior is. Her aft cabin features a queen-sized bed and a great deal of storage, and is well-ventilated by Hereshoff-style ports. Moving forward, there is a hallway with more storage and access to the Perkins engine from all angles. Fuel and water tanks are accessible as well, and are built into the interior of the boat so that they are fully visible.

Her galley is to port and features plenty of storage, including built-in storage for large pots and pans, a Force 10 stove and oven, a large refrigerator, and a stainless sink. Directly across from the galley to starboard is a comfortable seating area where 4 to 6 can dine within an arm's length from the galley. This dining area can also be converted into a double berth.

The most stunning feature of the galley and salon is the massive overhead hatch that lifts to form a wide-open skylight. Dine with the stars overhead and enjoy the breeze generated by the hatch and the multiple Hereshoff windows.

Forward, the forepeak features a nice double bed, a hatch leading out onto the deck, and the head. The toilet/shower have their own compartment, with sink and storage integrated into the cabin, so that moisture is retained in one area.

The pilothouse is just as comfortable as it is functional, with a full berth and full navigation setup so that she can be steered in all kinds of weather. The third entry into the interior is through the pilothouse.

On deck, her accommodations are just as generously appointed as they are below. Perhaps the most unusual and enjoyable feature of her deck space is the large bench seat just aft of the aft helm station. It provides a comfortable place to lounge under sail as well as a great vantage point from which to read the water while underway in the islands.

Her history

Shanghai Lilly turns heads in every port she enters. Designed by Naval Architect George Sutton and built at St. John’s Boat Works near Saint Augustine Florida, this round-chined hull was the smallest of the coastal schooners designed by Sutton. The unique feature of a 5’x 7’opening hatch brings incredible light and air to the spacious salon/galley below, creating a giant skylight that gives you the perfect balance between nature and comfort.

Her original owner single-handed for eight years throughout the Caribbean and made significant equipment investments and enjoyed her until health issues ended his sailing days.

The current owner spotted her lying in Georgetown, Bahamas, and was smitten by her graceful lines and the excellent condition of the steel.  She was acquired by the current owner in 2001, and for the next several years he worked on her a few months at a time, stripping the interior and rebuilding a spacious 3 cabin layout with bright white tongue and groove paneling trimmed with exotic hardwoods (teak doors, mahogany trim and Brazilian cherry cabin soles). He worked with Mack Sails to fully re-rig her in 2010, with 3 of her 5 sails furling. For the last several years she has been very lightly used, spending six months on the hard and the remainder of the year at a private dock.

Fully refitted, she is ready to enjoy island life again. Strong and capable, with a very comfortable motion underway, her schooner rig and three furled sails make it easy to shorten sail when needed.  With two steering stations, one on the aft deck and one in the spacious pilothouse, she is a joy to sail in all types of weather.

Broker's Notes

"Shanghai Lilly" is a boat you will fall in love with and she is offered at an incredibly low price. Call me! Her owners have loved her and cared for her, and their love shows in her every feature.

She is a traditionalist's boat. She does not have a 110 electrical system nor does she have air conditioning. These features could easily be added. Her owners wanted to enjoy the self-sufficiency of living on the hook enjoying nature, and because of this she is an incredibly low maintenance vessel.
