Details of Improvements to Original Construction

FROM THE OWNER:

Relatively few were needed as this was one of the finest boats built by Beneteau. However, as with all boats, some things were improved as the present owner discovered opportunities to make the boat better.

  • Original aluminum deck fill fittings corroded and were replaced with Scandvik SS fittings.
  • The original Volvo diesel engine (4500 rpm) was inappropriate and costly to maintain. It was replaced with a more cost effective Yanmar.
  • Aluminum hydraulic steering cylinder wore quickly and leaked twice. Replaced with HD bronze one.
  • Steering cylinder mount was too small and replaced with a large welded steel plate.
  • French hydraulic hoses were an inferior grade and were replaced (2013) with aircraft grade hoses
  • Original French windlass was too small and replaced in 2006 with a larger and stronger model by Lofrans.  The deck area beneath the windlass was reinforced.
  • The bottoms of all deck lockers were tilted inboard and held water. Now tilted outboard.
  • Deck drains were fitted with undersized 3/4" hoses. Now 1 1/2" hoses have been fitted.
  • Rudder was too thin at bottom and cracked with a light grounding. Now reinforced.
  • Bronze shaft bearing housing was installed to make the cutlass bearing easier to replace. (Originally needed to remove the whole shaft!)
  • House batteries were relocated to a specially constructed fan-cooled box forward of the engine. In their original location, they got too hot.
  • Installed safer latches on heavier drawers
  • Anchor locker floor raised slightly to allow proper drainage and reduce chain corrosion.
  • All untinned French copper wire was corroding on the high amp circuits and has been replaced with US tin coated copper wire (mostly in 2012).
  • Bottom has been barrier coated with 7 coats of epoxy, 2 coats of Interlux 1000 and 5 coats of Interlux 2000.  No blisters seen to date.
