Overview

Back in US after extended cruise!  Ready to go again!

Parrot Tales is back from a multiyear cruise on the East Coast of the US and the Caribbean.  She is equipped with all the requirements for extended cruising and has been through many upgrades and additions in the recent past.  Engine and generator both are low hours.  The interior has the look of a new boat even after 30 years.

The Gulfstar 45 is a center cockpit design with a beautiful aft master queen cabin and v-berth forward.  Known for their strength and durability, these Gulfstars are solid sailers and great cruisers.  Needs to be on your short list!

Accommodations

The layout of Parrot Tales is a classic center cockpit design.  The aft master cabin has a large centerline berth with a ensuite head and separate shower.  The forward guest cabin is a Vee berth and has a connecting head/shower combination which also opens to the salon.  The galley is port of the companionway and has a lot of counter space and storage cubbies.  Access to the engine space is also under the cockpit in the galley area. The nav station is to starboard.

The salon has two settees and is divided by a folding table.  The settees can be used a berths and the stbd settee actually pulls out to make a double.

Dual a/c units provide heat and cooling to the entire interior. Plus there are Hella 12V cabin fans throughout.

Galley

The U-shaped galley has a huge double stainless sink in a counter space under the companionway.  The fridge has a large top opening access door in the counter and included freezer section.  A 2 burner Galley Maid propane stove/oven complete the galley.  For quick meals, a microwave is included.

Mechanical

The engine is located in a great location for access and maintenance under the cockpit and just forward of the aft cabin.  It is a reliable Perkins 4-108 and was completely rebuilt in 2001.  The rebuild included every replaceable part and a new Hurth transmission,  More recently the engine motor mounts were ungraded and replaced in 2009, the heat exchanger was flushed and inspected in 2012, and new Stainless Steel exhaust riser was installed in 2010.

Electronics

On board there are full electronic systems for navigation and communication including Nexus Multi and Nexus Wind displays over the companionway hatch.  At the helm is the Autopilot and Chartplotter.

At the nav station below, is a Icom IC M700TY single sideband, Standard Horizon VHF, connections for satellite phone and independent depth display.

There are redundant and separate antennae for most systems.

Deck Equipment

The highlight of the deck and cockpit is the heavy duty hard bimini and the aluminum transom arch/davits.  The bimini has heavy duty stainless struts with canvas dodger, shade panels, and enclosures.  The arch serves a dinghy davit, solar panel mount, and antennae mounts.  Access ladder mounts at the side gates.  Cockpit cushions and Sport-A-Seats compliment the cockpit.

There is also a foredeck shade awning that mounts forward of the mast and is supported by the spinnaker halyard.

The ground tackle is a new Rocna 73lb primary anchor on 200 ft of 3/8" chain.  The secondary anchor is a 35lb Delta on 200 ft of chain/rope rode.  And as backup anchor, there is a Fortress FX-37 in storage bag with 200 ft of chain/rope rode.  There is also a custom anchor snubber/bridle with SS chain hook.

The windlass is a Lofrans 1200W with horizontal gypsyand foot controls that feed the rode directly into the chain locker below.

A life raft is located on the aft deck in a custom SS rack.   Last inspection was April, 2015.

Rigging

The sails and rig are relatively new as they were replaced and/or upgraded in the past 8 years.  Main and genoa in 2007.  Spinnaker and working jib in 2009.  All standing rigging in 2007 and running rigging in 2011.  Last year the spars were all stripped and repainted with Awlgrip.

Mainsail is a battened classic main with halyards accessed on the mast mounted winches. It is in a lazy bag with lazy jacks. The main sheet winch is located just aft of the helm for easy single handing.

The furling 130% genoa is controlled by oversized Lewmar 48 winches.

Included in the sail compliment is an asymmetrical spinnaker  with sock and a smaller working 90% jib.

Boat Highlights

Just a few of the upgrades and changes that have been added to Parrot Tales that are not on the standard Hirsh 45 include:

  • Bronze intake sea strainers for the engine and genset
  • Graphite packing in engine and rudder stuffing boxes
  • Redesigned rudder post bearings to correct original design issue
  • All steering components replaced and upgraded
  • 6 oversized deck cleats with full backing plates
