Overview

Challenge Twelve was built by Steve Ward for the Perth Western Australia based Challenge Syndicate and used as a trial horse for Australia II.  She was completely dismantled, restored and upgraded to the highest of standards in 2007, fitted out with a new single extrusion mast, carbon winches with a new North Sails inventory in 2009.  One of the few "modern "Twelves" with the very attractive low freeboard, she has been stored inside for the past several years, she is ready to sail in 2016 and realistically priced.

Deck Equipment

Lewmar carbon primary dwinch drums with carbon pedestals were installed in 2004.  the mainsheet is a Lewmar titanium #80 drivne by a carbon pedestal.  Halyard winches at the mast are 4 x Lewmar #58s with 2 x #48s as secondaries.  The runner winches are 2x#48 Lewmar.  There are six Lewmar lead blocks and two Frederikson genoa cars.

In spite of the heavy displacement nature of the design, a conscious effort was made to use modern hardware and limited use of fastenings.

Electronics and Navigational Equipment

Brookes and Gatehouse Halcyon 2000 system installed in 2006.  B&G 20/20 read outs on the mast x 3.  B&G WTP processor with amst head unit to determine "twist".  Load cel on headstay.  B&G "Deckman".  Furuno GPS.  Panasonic "Tablet" for navigation.  Portable VHF.

Safety

Plastimo life jackets x 24.  Flares as per USCG requirements.

Sails and Rigging

Mast and Rigging

A new mast was designed by Jacques Fouroux and insalled in 2007.  Unique in many ways, particularly as it is a single extrusion tube.  Shipping the extrusion from Holland was the most expensive part of the undertaking.  The standing rigging attachments call for the rods to cross over inside the extrusion and fasten on the inside which enabled a reduction in rod size.  The mast head is clean, uncomplicated and very light.  To comply with the minum mast weight and C of G requirements of the 12 Metre rule, a 19.5 Kg lead block is attached to the mast butt when when stepped.

The carbon boom and #1 spinnaker pole were designed and built by Carbospars.  The #2 carbon spinnaker pole is a 10 Kg lightweight triangular design by Petit Jean Composites.

North Sails inventory as follows;

Mainsails x 3; 2003, 2007, 2009  Genoas; Ultra light 07, Light 07, 05. Medium 03, 07 and 09 (hoisted twice).  Heavy 07.  Spinnakers include; Runners x 3, 03, 05 and 07. VMG light air x 3; 03, 05 and 07.  Assymetrical, 07;  Heavy runner, circa "French Kiss"
